VMWare Technology Enables Cloud-Based Email Alternative to Hosted Microsoft Exchange

Cary, NC April 15, 2009 — Inftek, a certified partner of Kerio Technologies, announces GetSync’d, a professional synchronized email service featuring clustered Kerio MailServers. GetSync’d combines the functionality of Kerio MailServer with VMWare technology for a high-powered alternative to Hosted Microsoft Exchange.

InfTek's Hosted Kerio MailServer

Kerio MailServer is an affordable groupware solution that enables users to share contacts and calendars and access email from any computer, iPhone, or smartphone with an Internet connection. To eliminate risk associated with single server implementations, InfTek has utilized VMWare High Availability technology to cluster multiple instances of Kerio MailServers and insure data accessibility.

“Kerio MailServer is rock solid but does not currently offer their own cluster model to protect against hardware failure,” said Mike Schaffner, CTO of InfTek, Inc. “When installed on a VMWare server farm, one of the other servers in the high availability cluster will pick up the processing and allow the end user to not notice any significant downtime.”

The Kerio MailServer cluster operates on the VMWare ESX platform, which replicates data on multiple servers and enables the connection to be transferred to another server if the current server goes down for any reason. It takes the server approximately 54 seconds to complete the transfer, ensuring that the end user sees virtually no downtime. In addition, every server in the Kerio MailServer cluster has redundant connections and power sources, enabling another connection or power source to quickly take over should a problem arise.

“Building infrastructure for near-zero downtime email is cost prohibitive for many businesses,” said James Gudeli, vice president of Business Development for Kerio. “InfTek’s Get Sync’d solution is a great option for maximizing email availability while minimizing IT expense.”

Inftek’s Disaster Recovery option permits all of the data to be replicated between servers in different physical data center locations. InfTek has server locations in both Dallas and Boston, ensuring that if power loss or a natural disaster brings servers down in one location, servers in the other location will take over in under a minute. The redundancy and immediate disaster recovery features of the Kerio MailServer cluster make it an affordable alternative to Microsoft Exchange.

“Our High Availability Kerio MailServer offerings are a cost effective, powerful, messaging solution ideal for tech-savvy businesses that need to be able to share information reliably without the threat of downtime,” said Scott Bowen, COO of InfTek, Inc.

New Feature List For Future Kerio MailServer 6.7

April 2, 2009 – 9:00 am

Currently in beta, Kerio MailServer 6.7 adds some promising features. InfTek does not run beta releases on our production servers, but we are excited to see these features in the future. As always, Kerio Technologies is commited to providing a solid Microsoft Exchange Alternative to the masses, and we love it!

The following Release Notes are for Kerio MailServer 6.7.0 Beta 2

Global Address List
Global address list is a list of Kerio MailServer users and groups with all details. The list
is periodically synchronized with local user database and directory servers (Active Directory,
Open Directory) in order to provide fresh and up-to-date contacts information. The list is also
available in all supported clients as a special Public Folder which allows users to view or print
full contact information including postal address, telephone number etc.

Entourage 2004/2008 auto-configuration
Configuration of Microsoft Entourage 2004/2008 hasn’t been easier. The email account in MS
Entourage 2004 or 2008 can be automatically configured with only few clicks using a new
utility available at the Integration page in WebMail (http://server/integration).

Native support for private events in Apple iCal’s CalDAV
Advanced CalDAV server in Kerio MailServer is introducing native support for private events
in Apple iCal, first on the market. Users can create events in their personal calendar and
mark them as private to protect privacy when sharing the calendar to other users. Support for
private events is fully compatible with all supported clients on all platforms, including mobile
devices.

Organize your contacts in Apple Address Book
Kerio Sync Connector for Mac offers an unique way how to organize your contacts in Apple
Address Book. It is possible to create groups of contacts in Apple Address Book and manage
these groups in all other supported email and groupware clients. Groupware clients like Microsoft
Outlook with Kerio Outlook Connector or Kerio WebMail use native support for contact
categories which represent contact groups synchronized from Apple Address Book.

Spam Filter Improvements
State-of-the-art anti-spam solution in Kerio MailServer has been improved to provide even
more accurate and faster spam filtering. The Spam Filter can now utilize more CPUs and
handle more emails in the message queue at once. Integrated SpamAssassin solution has been
updated to the latest 3.2.6 version. We’ve improved speed and performance of maintenance
of anti-spam databases for auto-whitelist and Bayes tokens in order to improve stability and
accuracy. Bayes spam filter is now auto-learned with emails which got high score in other
tests, like DNS blacklists.

Update of integrated McAfee anti-virus
Integrated McAfee anti-virus is now using the latest version 5.3.0.0 with improved speed of
scanning and lower memory footprint.

Eset NOD32 Antivirus plug-in update
New antivirus plug-in for Eset NOD32 Antivirus 3.0 is extending the list of supported external
antivirus products. The plug-in is available on both Windows and Linux operating systems.

Kerio Assist utility for Mac OS X
The Kerio Assist utility is helping us to solve stability issues and unexpected shutdowns of
Kerio MailServer and it’s components. This utility is now also available in Mac OS X installations
and allows administrator to upload an information about recent Kerio MailServer crash
to Kerio Technologies directly via the Administration Console or manually from a command
line.

Kerio Active Directory Extension on 64bit
Kerio Active Directory Extension has a special installation package for 64bit Windows servers
with Active Directory.

InfTek Hosted Kerio MailServer- The Top Microsoft Exchange Alternative

March 24, 2009 – 10:16 am

We are always happy to see that Kerio MailServer always ranks highly for those looking for a Microsoft Exchange Alternative for thier messaging and collaboration needs. NetworkWorld.Com is no exception. The following article found Kerio MailServer to be a top performer in the competition to be the number one Microsoft Exchange Server alternative.

Microsoft Exchange Alternatives: Pros and Cons

By Joel Snyder , Network World , 03/09/2009

The one-two punch of Exchange server on the back end and Outlook e-mail client on the desktop has allowed Microsoft to pull down 65% of the enterprise messaging market.

However, with the release of Exchange 2007, Microsoft opened the door for some substantial competition. The upgrade costs, hardware requirements, and hassles of jumping to the latest version have many businesses asking: “Is Microsoft still the right answer?”

In this Clear Choice Test, we explore how Exchange alternatives stack up against Microsoft’s offer, as well as each other.

Our testing focuses on products for midsized deployments of 1,000 mailboxes or less. We tested six Exchange alternatives: CommuniGate Pro (CommuniGate Systems), Kerio MailServer (Kerio Technologies), MDaemon Pro (Alt-N Technologies), MailSite Fusion (MailSite), Scalix Enterprise Edition (Scalix, a Xandros company), and Zimbra Collaboration Suite, Professional Edition (Zimbra, a Yahoo company).

We installed and tested each, focusing on client and mobility support, scalability up to a moderate number of users, ease of use, and support for compliance and legal discovery features.

While all were rock solid when it came to basic tasks such as sending and retrieving messages, there were key differences when it came to manageability and product integration, support for different clients, and system performance.

While there are places where our Exchange alternatives outdo Exchange — such as in price/performance, Macintosh interoperability, and manageability for mid-sized deployments — Exchange still beats the competition in many areas because it offers a range of features that aren’t easy to find in the third-party market.

While it’s difficult to point to one overall best product among the Exchange alternatives, there are clear strengths and differences based on features supported and product style.

Our top scorers, Kerio MailServer and Zimbra Collaboration Suite, offer a good combination of multi-platform interoperability, a good end-user experience and solid Outlook integration. While each has faults, these are good starting points for anyone looking for an alternative to Exchange. Other products in our test also have special areas of expertise, such as CommuniGate Pro’s VoIP integration and high performance. This breadth of options bodes well for any system manager looking for a different path.

While MailSite Fusion and Scalix both had high points, both also had significant drawbacks for the midsized deployment. Scalix’s lack of integrated management makes it more appropriate to very large deployments where a technical staff is available to handle the increased operational burden, and MailSite Fusion’s lack of a MAPI connector knocked it out for any business wanting to keep the high-quality Outlook experience.

InfTek’s Hosted Kerio MailServer takes another swing at Microsoft Exchange

March 12, 2009 – 10:03 am

With the release 6.6 of Kerio MailServer, Kerio Technologies has made another push forward in their campaign to take a bite out of the Microsoft Exchange market. We mentioned the ActiveSync capabilities of Kerio MailServer in July, and have noted the expanding capabilities of the 6.x releases as an increasingly viable alternative to Exchange. Version 6.6 encompasses a variety of improvements, including expanded features for mobile and iPhone users. Two items which stand out prominently are the addition of resource scheduling and the Exchange Migration Tool.

Resource scheduling allows shared company resources — anything from conference rooms and projectors to company cars — to be scheduled and reserved using MailServer’s shared calendars. Access controls can be specified by administrators for each resource, and a “Reservation Manager” can be assigned with add/edit/delete priveleges. Mac users can access the resource schedules through Entourage or iCal (although Kerio is less thrilled with the inelegance of the iCal solution and its LDAP dependencies). PC users have access through Outlook, and everyone can schedule resources through Kerio Webmail, which is fully compatible with Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer.

The Kerio Exchange Migration Tool is provided free of charge to Kerio 6.6 users, and is designed to take a lot of the fear out of making a transition from Exchange to Kerio. It runs on a Windows box (works fine with virtualization) between the Exchange and Kerio servers and, in about 4 clicks, transfers all of the existing Exchange data, users, etc. to Kerio MailServer.

Additional features in include improved iPhone support (with HTML email and attachment viewing), and an iCal auto-configuration script which is generated by the server for each Mac user. The auto-configuration sets up CalDAV and LDAP to work with Kerio, handling all of the details without requiring the user to know anything more than their own machine’s administrative password and their Kerio MailServer login information.

Kerio MailServer Achieves VMware Ready Status Kerio’s Mobile Groupware Server Tested for Deployment in VMware Infrastructure Environment

March 10, 2009 – 1:45 pm

SAN JOSE, CA — (Marketwire) — 03/09/09 — Kerio Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of award-winning Internet security and messaging solutions and select member of the VMware Technology Alliance Partner (TAP) program, is announcing the immediate availability of the Kerio MailServer Virtual Appliance, which has achieved VMware Ready status. This designation indicates that Kerio MailServer Virtual Appliance has passed a detailed evaluation and testing process managed by VMware. VMware provides TAP program members with tools to develop products that are complementary to VMware virtualization software and deliver high-value solutions to joint customers.

“Kerio MailServer effectively leverages VMware virtualization to allow businesses to easily access email, calendars, contacts and tasks anytime and anywhere,” said Bernie Mills, senior director, alliances programs at VMware. “We are pleased that Kerio is delivering added value to customers with innovative technology combined with significant business benefits of VMware virtualization, including lower capital and operating expenses, business continuity, strengthened security and reduced energy consumption.”

This new certification allows Kerio MailServer to be easily “dropped” into a VMware server infrastructure with standard configuration and does not require a separate OS installation. Once installed, Kerio MailServer Virtual Appliance can be administered remotely and updated like the standard product.

Virtualization allows companies to reduce energy and hardware costs over time. IT organizations have the flexibility to choose a single powerful server or a blade enclosure to have increased scalability. These flexible solutions provide enhanced integration with additional storage systems.

“Kerio is honored to receive our VMware Ready status,” said James Gudeli, vice president of Business Development for Kerio Technologies. “We have a long history of delivering messaging software that exceeds industry standards and meets the needs of the SME market, and we believe this will help our channel provide even more value to their customers.”

For VARs that standardize in VMware environments for their SME customers, Kerio MailServer Virtual Appliance is easy to install and provides secure messaging collaboration for the mobile workforce to access business data.
Kerio MailServer includes integrated anti-spam and anti-virus, built-in backup and archiving, and multiple mobile device support.

The VMware Ready program is a VMware co-branding program for qualified partner products and is a benefit of the VMware TAP program. With more than 900 members worldwide, the VMware TAP program works with best-of-breed technology partners to provide them a comprehensive set of VMware technical and marketing services, support, tools and expertise to deliver enhanced value to joint customers.
